Sociology 2278: Climate Sociology
Climate change is the global social problem of our times, and yet sociological analysis of climate change is just now starting to build momentum. In this graduate-level elective seminar, we consider foundational concepts and measures from fields both central and peripheral to climate change, with the goal of developing our own distinctively sociological approaches to the problem. We will engage classical and contemporary work that articulates how the social relates to the environmental, as well as new and forthcoming research on the social causes and effects of climate change. We will also familiarize ourselves with the data and methods used by climate scholars, including those whose work currently informs global climate policy and politics. Assignments include close reading, engaged in-class discussion, regular response-writing, and the capstone exercise: an empirical research paper illustrating the fast-growing sociology of climate change.
